Sewer Lines - Definition and Ownership/Maintenance Responsibility:

District Main: A wastewater collection line owned and maintained by the District that receives wastewater from more than one sewer connection. District Mains are typically 8 inch diameter pipe or larger and reside in a public roadway or easement granted to the District.

Private Main: A wastewater collection line owned and maintained by a private party that receives wastewater from more than one connection. Private Mains are typically located in private roadways, apartment or condominium complexes, or commercial centers. There are no easements granted to the District for Private Mains. A Private Main may be owned and maintained by a property owner's association or agreement between private parties.

Service Lateral: A Service Lateral (also referred to as a Sewer Lateral) is a pipe that connects a residence or building to a District Main or a Private Main. Service Laterals are typically 4 to 8 inches in diameter. All portions of a Service Lateral are owned and maintained by the owner of the residence or building served by the Service Lateral, including portions lying within a public roadway or easement granted to the District.
